The idea for today’s point of focus comes from Gregg Krech at the Todo Institute. He says:
“Keep track of your mistakes today. You may not make any. But perhaps you’ll leave a typo in a memo at work, or spill some juice while pouring it into a glass…”
Each time you make a mistake, ask yourself it it resulted from misplaced attention. What could you do differently next time to improve your focus?
Mistake: Leaving the keys in the front door knob - on the outside - overnight.
Result: Nasty look from SO, total risk of being robbed and murdered.
Do Different: Hmm…perhaps I should put a post it note on the entertainment center (right in front of the door) reminding myself to take the keys out. Nothing else has worked thus far! (Yes, I’ve done this multiple times over the years.)
Hi Alicia. Thanks for trying this exercise
What about this: every time you walk up to your door and put the keys in, stop. Take a deep breath in an out, then turn the keys in the knob with your full attention on the keys (as opposed to dinner, evening plans, work, etc.).
Feel yourself moving the keys into the lock and twisting the knob; feel yourself opening the door and then pulling the keys out again before you step inside. Make it into a sort of mini-meditation. (The trick will just be remembering to do that!)
