What impression do you leave on other people? Does it match the picture of the person you want to be?
Take a moment to write a brief description of the way you wish other people saw you. Write it as if it were true, e.g. “Maile is the, happiest, healthiest, most compassionate person I’ve ever met.”
Now give yourself permission to be that person. Remind yourself as often as you need.
And keep an eye out for the Naikan Challenge. Coming soon!
Love this. Truly. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome. I’ve been practicing this one all day, and I really like it. This may become one of my standards.
Maile, this is an awesome exercise. I’m going to try it over at mentalhealthnotes.com and link back to you. Are you going to share yours here?
It’s all in the mind …
Hi Alicia.
You know, it’s funny. I feel uncomfortable sharing mine here, yet if I truly give myself permission to be that person, sharing would follow naturally.
So here it is: When other people look at me, they see the fittest*, happiest, most unapologetically self-confident person they’ve ever met. I give myself permission to be that person.
(”Fit” as in energetic, muscular, healthy, etc. I get the impression British English has a slightly different meaning. Yes?)
[...] Today’s Mental Health Month tip was inspired by an interesting exercise posted by Maile over at Breath by Breath. It’s an exercise I highly recommend; you can check out the full details in her post Giving Ourselves Permission to be Happy. [...]
