Have you noticed this peculiarity about many of the cooking shows on TV these days? The audio recording seems to heighten every subtle cooking sound–the crack of an egg in the palm of the chef’s hand, the swish of the wire whisk against the side of a ceramic bowl, the gentle tap of a wooden spoon settling onto the counter top. Immersed in these sounds, I imagine myself in some idyllic grandmother’s kitchen on a cozy day; soon she’ll ask me to set the table and our huge family will sit down to dinner together. Just thinking about it makes me smile.
A whole day like that would be sublime, but hiring a sound tech to follow us around isn’t very practical. I think, however, that we can achieve the same thing by shifting our attention. Which brings me to today’s point of focus exercise:
Notice the subtle sounds you make throughout the day–when you set down a glass, close a door, push back a chair, etc. Did anything change for you, doing this exercise? Did you notice anything you might otherwise have missed?
Well, I can’t do this one very good today seeing as how my right ear is stopped up. But I notice that my jaw pops a LOT louder when my ear is stopped up!!
So true. Funny how the magic of a camera and sound recordist can give us those sights
and sounds that were ours all along.
Good on you for reminding us to reclaim them.
