10 little known facts about me:
1. Growing up I went to 8 different schools, including three high schools. After that, it took three universities before I finished my bachelor’s degree. In my childhood, this was because my dad was in the Air Force, and we moved every two years or so.
In college? I guess it had just become a habit. That and…
2. I dropped out of college after two years and moved out to San Francisco with my boyfriend. We knew exactly two people: (1) a friend of a friend and (2) a cousin. We slept on both of their floors until more than a month later when we finally found a room in a stranger’s apartment, which we rented for $1500 a month (thanks to the dot-com boom). It was the best decision I ever made.
3. I’ve had poetry published in national literary magazines.
4. I was a gymnast as a child and a cheerleader in high school. Since I went to three different schools, I had to make up audition tapes and send them to the new schools before we moved. I couldn’t have done it without my mom’s help.
5. I’m a certified yoga instructor, but I don’t teach.
6. I had the lead in my high school musical (Once Upon a Mattress) senior year. It’s one of my proudest accomplishments and something I’d love to do again some day.
7. I hate shoes and am passionately barefoot whenever possible. I’m such an evangelist for this, I’ve convinced at least three people to shun shoes altogether or to at least change their habits. People don’t realize the health problems they cause until it’s too late. Almost every Western foot disease (often assumed to be a natural part of aging) is the result of wearing shoes. There is no such thing as a ‘properly fitting’ shoe.
8. (This is hard!) I’ve completed the initial training to become a direct entry midwife but did not go forward with the apprenticeship. I decided I wasn’t ready to commit to a job where I would be on call all the time. However…
9. I continue to be passionate home birth, natural birth and the whole lot of hippiness that gets discussed over at Mothering Magazine’s forums. I’ve wanted to be a mother for as long as I can remember, though I’m doing my best to appreciate the freedom afforded by not having children. I can think of at least ten women in my extended circle of friends who are either pregnant or have just given birth, though, and it’s getting hard to wait.
10. I am a morning person, and I always have been.
