F&H say in How We Choose to be Happy: “Rather than responding reflexively [to your environment], you choose your frame of mind in advance. You ask yourself the fundamental question: “What attitude will best enhance the quality of this experience right now?“
Your inner critic will likely come up will all kinds of reasons not to make your happiness a priority–it’s selfish in light of all the suffering in the world, you’re deluding yourself or being insincere, etc. But ask yourself: What am I afraid will happen if I put myself first? Who is my suffering really helping?
If you want to be happy, then setting this priority is essential. Try it right now, and see what happens.
